Oats
Oats (now Oakley) came to Adopt A Golden-Birmingham from a shelter. He was most likely going to be euthanized because he had a very significant heart murmur. It was determined that he was going to need open-heart surgery to fix the murmur. This is a very expensive surgery, but thanks to many generous donations, enough money was raised, and he prepared to head to Auburn for the procedure.
His foster had taken wonderful care of him while he waited for this appointment, and she was determined to care for him through the surgery. When they arrived at Auburn and Oats was being taken in for surgery prep, his eyes followed his foster mom all the way until he couldn’t see her anymore. It was at that moment that foster mom and Oats knew where his forever home was going to be.
She picked him up after his surgery and has lovingly cared for him, and he is thriving. She says, “I never thought I would have another dog. I lost what I thought was my heart dog in 2022 and never wanted to go through that pain again. Then – divine intervention – I saw the Facebook post about Oats. I had been approved years before but never fostered. Oats had kennel cough and needed a foster to get him out of the vet’s office before a holiday. He had such a sweet face. I reached out, then went and got him. He was so scared and so skinny. But so very sweet. We found out about his heart murmur and I just knew he was where he was supposed to be. He is the sweetest boy. We’ve changed his name to Oakley. He brings so much joy and happiness to my life every day. AGB has been just wonderful to work with during all of Oakley’s tests and surgery. I will foster again but there will never be another Oakley.”
Many thanks to all of the individuals who donated to Oakley’s medical fund. His surgery could not have happened without this generosity.
